Have you ever been curious about what life after high school is like?
They say “nothing can substitute experience”. I agree. The quote took me back to when I was working at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) since May 2022 for almost 3 months out of sheer boredom. But who would’ve thought those experiences change my views on almost everything?
BCCK is a place where they held tons of activities such as ramadan buffets, international conference, and graduation ceremony. I worked as a customer service and sometimes a cashier.
At first, it was very challenging since I’m not used to work 14 hours daily. One thing I’m so grateful is that I was working there with a supportive friend of mine. The cruelest part working there was having to deal with grown ups and certain superiors but most of them were very sweet and understanding with the fact that I’m new to this. The working environment was engaging and productive which complement to the SDG number 8; decent work and economic growth.
Nevertheless, I met many new friends from various backgrounds and ethnics even. I learned Iban language, their tradition and lifestyle. The place opened up my eyes for how many were struggling with financial problems, family problems and more. These experiences make me look back to what I have and thanking Allah for giving me the life I am in right now.
All in all, it was a strenous journey yet holds so much memories. If I have a chance to experience another job during study break again in the future, I would love to experience working at a coffee shop!
