REFLECTIVE JOURNAL 03 : ELDERLY CARE SERVICES

“Who is not kind towards our youngsters and infants, and does not respect our elderly and senior people, he is not from among us” (17:23)

As we all know, people with the age range 65 and above will be considered as older adults and that is the age where these people need to be taken care of the most, especially by their kids. But what happens to those who don’t have kids or get neglected by their own family? Yes, the majority of them get sent to a nursing home.

In the year of 2009, fire cadet troops in my school did volunteer work at iCare Elderly Care Centre (ICECC) and of course, I was one of them! There, we gave the elderly emotional support by being good listeners and gave suitable pieces of advice. They talked about how much they miss their kids, their life journey, and more but most of them were heartwarming stories.

After the ice-breaking session, we handed them food that we already prepared specially for them. Not long after, we could see the brightest smile from each of them and that is where I know they felt loved and taken care of, concurrently satisfying the SDG number 10 which is reduced inequalities. By the end of the volunteering, we also did a DIY letter card session where we decorated and wrote a heartfelt letter for them to read whenever they have a bad day just so they feel seen

To sum up, I believe that youngsters should respect and take good care of their elderly because they are the ones who raised us to be the person we are now today. How could we abandon people whose intention is only to see us having a life like a bed of roses?
